A Chance to Make History
2009 was a very successful year for the Cedar Rapids Mens Rugby team, but 2010 brings an opportunity to make HISTORY.
We are sure by now most members of Headhunter Nation are aware of the challenges that stand in front of us, but for those of you who are not - let's recap.
2009 Iowa League Play ended with Cedar Rapids #1 in Iowa and moving on to the Midwest playoffs. Only the first 2 rounds of the Midwest playoffs occur in the fall and the last two rounds are played in the spring.
Round 1 Cedar Rapids beat the Peoria Pigs who were the #2 team from Illinois. Round 2 Cedar Rapids beat Minnesota #1 team the St. Paul Jazz Pigs.
Now we are all caught up, let's talk
about the future. Cedar Rapids has locked their spot in the Midwest Final Four - who are the other teams? The Gentlemen of Dubuque (Iowa #2), Fox Valley Maoris (Central North #1 - Michigan area) and the Cleveland Eastern Suburbs (Eastern #2 - Ohio area). So for our next round of playoff action the Cedar Rapids Headhunters will play Dubuque and the other two teams will play one another with the winners of each match meeting to determine the #1 and #2 standings of the entire Midwest.
So how the hell are we going to make history?
Who ever wins between Cedar Rapids and the Gentlemen of Dubuque will be promoted to a Division II team in the fall. The team will have proven to the Unions they are ready for a higher level of rugby.
Is that it?
No. The #1 and the #2 teams coming out of the Midwest will move on to Nationals. With a victory over Dubuque, Cedar Rapids also locks their spot to move on to Nationals. 16 teams in all will be invited to Nationals with the first few rounds being played at different locations throughout the USA and the finals being played in Colorado, home of the USA Eagles.
The focus and determination of this squad will make for a very exciting 2010.
To every member of Headhunter Nation - please have a happy and safe New Years Eve.
